What is EMDR?

Anchor 1

EMDR Overview

As mentioned on our Services page, our founders have created a unique 12-Session model of EMDR for our work at Root to Branch. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an empirically validated treatment for trauma, and recognized as one of the most effective therapies available. EMDR utilizes an evidenced based protocol to safely guide clients through reprocessing traumatic experiences in order to turn them into more adaptive working memories, reducing the signs and symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc. An important part of EMDR is the use of bilateral stimulation (BLS) throughout the reprocessing to support the brain's natural way of processing and storing information.

As of today, there have been over 70 randomized controlled trials conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of EMDR, with about 45 of these focused specifically on PTSD. Beyond PTSD, another 28 of these trials explore EMDR’s application to not only other mental health conditions, but also chronic pain. Overall, these trials show “consistent positive outcomes” regarding the application of EMDR, and support this treatment modality as a “robust and effective intervention for trauma and PTSD”.

Now, not only does the research praise EMDR’s efficacy, it also shows us notable reports of faster symptom reduction in fewer sessions compared to other trauma-focused therapies. Specifically, these trials all show the positive therapeutic outcomes are “rapidly” achieved, and importantly: achieved without homework or fully detailed descriptions of the disturbing event.
